I have some freshly cut Cedar, and I would like to preserve its rich red color before it fades to gray – How?

December20

Is there some type of clear stain, or sealer, or something that I can apply to the wood to preserve it’s natural red color?

The wood is mostly going to be indoors, (molding, trim, some furniture). However, if you can suggest something to preserve the wood for either indoors or outdoors, that would be great!

And, if there is something, is it possible to purchase it at Lowe’s/Home Depot type of stores? Thanks!

Adam,

to preserve the rich color, you need to seal the wood. This will prevent air/moisture from entering the pores and greying the color. I would recommend using a polyurethane finish. Any type of poly would work well. Depending upon the amount, I would use a spray can, it’s easier than using a brush. Follow directions on the can and you will be fine.

good luck

I had a home built on an island in GA in 1984. The siding was board and batten cedar. We were going to stain it but when the siding was delivered it was such a beautiful color the builder and I decided to preserve the color with clear sealer. It lasted for years before I had to re-treat it. You can get clear sealer anywhere, but here’s one suggestion: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=wood+sealer&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053. If you are using finished cedar you can work more easily with a brush but if it’s rough cedar you’ll need to use a sprayer of some type because of the rough texture of the wood.

We have had very good to excellent success with a product called CWF (short for clear wood finish). It is made by the Flood Co. It is primarily used for exterior surfaces, but I see no reason you can’t use it indoors. You may or may not find it at Lowe’s or Home Depot, but most hardware stores carry it.
