This is an inexpensive homemade water filter setup. Made from a coffee creamer container, a Brita Water Filter and a 2 inch rubber O-Ring. There are two ways to kill any virus or bacteria which might be in the water and that is to boil the water or to use chemicals. For this video I chose bleach, but there are other chemicals that are available in most outdoors style stores or military surplus stores. I forgot to add to the video that for water that is filled with larger debris and that is a little more cloudy to use a cloth inside the container to extend the life of the filter in use. Be sure to follow the instructions of the brita filter prior to use in the feild, if filter is not placed in a glass of water before using you will end up with water with charcoal dust floating in it. VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT………..bleach is only partly efective in killing the viruses cryptosporidium and giardia if used alone. The best way to kill all of the little buggers in water is to boil it. The tabs that you can buy at most outdoor stores are also considered a top method. If used prior to filtering the bad taste can be removed. Before using a filter or chemical in your water PLEASE do research on all of it!!!! Find the best option for you then make your choice of how you wish to proceed. I am not responsible for someone getting sick. Do the research!

do you know a good …
do you know a good home-made method to change the carbon in the brita filter?
You missed my point …
You missed my point. it is how to make your own gear. I too have a steripen and have used the coffee filter. love it! I just wanted to show another inexpensive way for a DIY project.
Metal coffee filter …
Metal coffee filter,and steripen!
I also place the O …
I also place the O ring on the Brita Filter so it will fit inside the plastic funnel. For my test it gave the filter a tighter fit with no leaks. Could just be the difference in the recycled coffee whitener container I used to make this water filter.

thanks for the video……..
I have read about …
I have read about what you have talked about here. I was just showing one way to help purify and filter water. There are many other ways it can be done.
there are better …
there are better filters then a carbon filter?
In mexico they place 2 or 3 litre clear pop bottles on there corigated metal roofs to sterilize the water in the sun,
foil and pop bottle would work for a long time. I just put some of the smallest holesin the top neck of the popop bottle and sub merse it with the lid or tube feed.
let air leave or squeeze the bottle gently and let the water the space back up.
Dirt outside, never inside. Put a plastic bag or bottle. kill microbes.

Im close to a couple of surplus stores here. I have one I go to that is like the walmart of MS stores, and a smaller one that I hit every few weeks. Asheboro and in Greensboro. Can’t beat the prices.
Nice little set up …
Nice little set up NCHiker1970 great to see that you are still innovating .Were are you getting your military bags and other stuff at ,you close to a surplus store
I had been placing …
I had been placing the O-ring on the inside in the first ones I made. The bottles changed and in order to keep the seal I placed the O-ring on the outside. Both ways have been water tight so far. Before I place the filter setup in the bottle I check for leaks with a little bit of water. Also I found that the O-ring on the outside holds the setup together better. There is less chance of it coming apart and letting unclean water into the filtered water.
I am experimenting …
I am experimenting with a homemade setup like this for disaster prep, but I have a question. What is the purpose of having the o ring on the outside rather than inside, helping to create a tighter and hopefully waterproof seal? Do you ever have an issue with water leakage from that area where the pieces fit together?
Be Smart? What are …
Be Smart? What are you trying to say? I own a commercial water filter and have used it, the one I bought does not remove near the amount of the chemical taste left behind by using bleach or the purification tabs. Let me ask this, do you boil or treat your water or just use the filter? Next time choose your words before just putting them out there like that. Someone could take it the wrong way. Yes I felt insulted!
I don’t think I …
I don’t think I would trust this. I will carry my MSR instead. Be smart and just buy one dude!
Thanks, NC, you …
Thanks, NC, you saved me a lot of time finding these things out for myself!
I did not realize …
I did not realize the amount of water we went through! Wow!!
Not sure what they are made of I have no more in the house at the time, but I only use those when I am out of bleach on the trail and thats not very often! Hate the taste. I think they are an Iodine base.
Okay, so on average …
Okay, so on average, your ball park guestimate, using two drops of clorox per quart, you use one Britta filter for every 11 qt/day x 5 days/trip x 64 trips = 3520 quarts (880 gallons). Not bad.
Sorry, only a military brat, not familiar with military issue purification tabs. What do they use in that?
For two of us using …
For two of us using the system we would average about 10 Nalgene bottles maybe 12 per day. Sometimes less depending on the temp. Most trips we took lasted on average 5 days. The tabs I used were the military issue tabs. They are cheap but I know they work.
How much water do …
How much water do you think you used per trip on average? Again, just trying to get a ball park feel for when the filter will crap out on me.
Water tabs–are you refering to the chlorine or the Iodine type?
I allow the bleach …
I allow the bleach about a range of 15 min- 30 min to work before I filter it. Time enough for me to set up camp or get everything ready for a snack on the trail while waiting. I used one filter for 64 trips before I started tasting the bleach. If you use the water tabs it will still give you the funky taste even if the filter is new, but putting it through the filter twice maybe three times helps out a little.
How long do you …
How long do you allow bleach to work before filtering? How does that vary with temperature?
Have you ever come to the end of a filter’s ability to remove the chlorine? If so, how many quarts of treated water do you think that took? Ball park figure if you aren’t sure.
Well put I could …
Well put I could not have said it better myself! A filter is made to get rid of large debris in water and make it clear the boiling process is the best way to make your water safe to drink after the use of any filtering.
The short answer is …
The short answer is yes, all that stuff does matter. However boiling water has always worked to kill any nasty bugs living in your water. That is the most inexpensive way to make water safe to drink.
Good Job! Thanks
