For most applications the 222 joystick is brilliant, not much cop for panning or titling with moving subjects though as one hand has to squeeze the grip.

Would really depend on what kind of photography you do. Something like a 056 or 391RC2 are good starting points. The great thing with a tripod system is that you can get different heads for diffeent applications. If you are getting the 70-200 (the f2.8?) then something like a 701RC2 is fantastic (as the lens has a collar) for sports and wildlife, not so good for portrait orientation for lenses without tripod collars.
References :
Yeah the 322RC2 is an amazing head, it's really good for quick manipulation, but if you want accuracy one of the pan/tilt ones are much more suited for your purpose. The head you buy not only needs to support your gear but also suit your shooting style and be appropriate for what you shoot.

I tried using a ball head (the 322RC2) for landscape for once, that just felt unnatural, and when you adjusted for one thing, something else was no longer right, just not quite accurate enough.
References :
Got to agree with PS on this one. That head is phenomenal. That said, it depends on the 'type' of photography you wish to do. Other people will prefer to use a more traditional pan/tilt head. I prefer my 322RC2, though.
