Submitted by markb on September 15, 2007 - 00:00.
The following is the transcript of an IM conversation with a former translator, "Jane". This translator fled Iraq in early 2007, due to persistent intimidation, threats to the translator's family, and finally the execution of a close colleague outside the former translator's home.
Mark:
Are you safe where you are at the moment, or are there still gangs looking for people like you? Is the situation better or worse then 3 months ago?
Jane:
I can say it wrose, I still afraid from what might be hiden to me and waiting. My family all threatened for last three months, before I leave and now. I pay a high rent for one room there are lots of groups that look for us, i be afriad from them because I dont have legal residant here
Mark:
I understand.
Jane:
but now things been changed, i got a peice of paper from UNHCR saying that I am in the process of the Refugees issue.
Mark:
okay - that is good - although, you really should not have to be going through this.
Jane:
this help me a littel bit. Today I am followed from market and have to change my way every day to work. The militias still looking for people even where I am, it feels dangerous when walk out in the street.
